Just to answer this question very easily and efficiently:
On Guitar Hero 3 you cannot play four players at all.
But if you're talking about Guitar Hero: World Tour. Then yes. You can play GH:WT With four people even on the PlayStation 2.
But no you can't even play 4 players at all on any console on Guitar Hero 3. The game is for 1-2 players. Sorry

IF YOUR PS3 IS BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE WITH PS2, THEN YES YOU CAN PLAY IT. AND YEAH, YOU NEED AN ADAPTOR FOR THE GUITAR.

how much do you think it will cost?
and can you find that is more cheaper than playstation?
The cheapest way to go would be to buy a used ps2, used GH3, and a used guitar. Best place to go for stuff like that where I live would be EB games or Game Stop.

I have guitar hero for playstation 3 and it burned in a fire so im getting a ps3 and will it work?
It depends which game you have.
For GH3: you need to use the PS3 Les Paul guitar or buy an adapter for your PS2 guitar to play on the PS3 (TAC.com)
For RB1 and RB2: The standard Stratocaster guitar works backwards with the PS2 and PS3 since they operate on a USB Dongle.
For GHWT: The guitar should be compatible with PS3, but I have no knowledge for this game.
