Are Guitar Lessons Really Needed? Many people taught themselves to play the guitar and once they had mastered a level of playing with which they were comfortable, they did not feel that formal guitar lessons were necessary despite having probably picked up numerous bad playing habits. Like anything in life, whatever a person's ability, benefit can be obtained by taking some sort of formal instruction. It may be a simple case of holding the guitar or perhaps fingering the chords incorrectly but with a little help those mistakes can be rectified. Since the 1950s and guitars become more popular, most people would simply purchase a chord book and try to mimic the pictures contained within. They would then move on to sheet music and guitar tablature and practice changing chords quickly and smoothly. Why waste money on guitar lessons when they were making satisfactory progress themselves? It is without doubt that most of these people having reached the limits of their untrained ability regretted not taking some guitar lessons to enable them to improve further. Without some sort of formal training is very rare for a musician to be able to read sheet music and would need to resort to playing by "ear". That is when they listened to music and learn to play a song based on what they had heard. It can be very hard to play a song correctly using this method. Guitar lessons are needed if you wish to read sheet music properly and therefore expand your guitar playing ability and prospects. Is a Musician a Good Teacher? A lot of accomplished guitar players will offer to teach guitar lessons. However, whilst they may be excellent musicians are they good teachers? More often than not the only motivation to provide guitar lessons was to provide additional income between their gigs. You may be better off finding a trained guitar teacher who will have learnt how to be a good teacher first and foremost. You will then be able to learn more music theory whilst they teach you the various chords and notes on the fret board. For those of you that are daunted by the thought of guitar lessons on a one-to-one basis or perhaps cannot afford formal guitar lessons, there are many websites offering guitar lessons free of charge. Once you have mastered the basics you may then wish to undertake a few face-to-face guitar lessons to improve your ability. Whether you choose to take guitar lessons from a guitar teacher or online, if you wish to master the instrument it will take many years of hard work and dedication. You may well be able to play a few songs after a few weeks but do not be fooled into thinking that you do not need guitar lessons.
